Cisco is to lay off almost 500 jobs across California.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings reveal the networking giant is to cut 471 jobs across its Bay Area offices. That number includes 154 employees at its Milpitas campus, 81 at its San Francisco office, and 36 at its San Jose location.

The layoffs are scheduled to become effective on 13 July. Specifics on the business functions or employee roles at risk were not disclosed in the WARN filings.

The layoffs come after Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins revealed in May that the firm would be cutting 4,000 jobs worldwide, representing less than 5% of its total employee base.

Robbins suggested the cuts came from readjusting Cisco’s operating model to adjust to AI use, while increasing investment in silicon, optics, security, and pushing employees to include AI in their workflows.

In a recent interview with SDxCentral, Cisco CPO Jeetu Patel said the U.S. networking giant was "always short" of highly capable technical talent.

"We need more talent in silicon. We need more talent in cyber. We need more talent in networking," Patel said.

The Californian redundancies come almost a year after Cisco laid off more than 157 employees at various locations in the area, with the majority of roles cut at its site in Milpitas base.

Those redundancies occurred days after Robbins told the media he didn’t see Cisco using AI as an excuse to reduce headcount. But the tech was among the reasons Cisco cited for cutting 7% of its workforce in August 2024.

February of that year saw Cisco’s global workforce reduced by 5% in a restructuring move aimed at maximizing shareholder returns.
