Zayo Europe tapped Ciena’s optical technology to augment its new 3,500-kilometer network in Germany.

Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) and Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) coherent optic solutions were deployed in the network to support 400 Gb/s (400G) speeds. The technology can be updated to boost the network bandwidth speeds of 800G and 1.6 Tb/s (1.6T).

Zayo Europe worked with local dark fibre network supplier GasLINE on the deployment, which features a direct shortcut from Berlin to Frankfurt in a bid to provide a low-latency path for high-frequency trading across key European financial hubs.

“There’s a growing need for high-capacity networks across Germany to meet the demands of an increasingly digital economy,” Virginie Hollebecque, VP and leader of EMEA at Ciena, noted in a statement. “As a carrier managed services partner leveraging Ciena optical technology, Zayo Europe can offer differentiated wavelength services across its entire European footprint, including key long-haul routes across Germany.”

Like its American namesake, Zayo Europe has been building out its network across the continent. Company figures from last May stated it connects some 1,500 data centers to more than 50,000 enterprise sites in North America and Europe. Zayo Europe recently added an 11th hub in Strasbourg, France.

“Germany is a key strategic market for Zayo Europe, and with the EU pushing to advance AI capabilities across the continent, there’s a pressing need for networks within Germany that can support these new workloads," Zayo Europe CEO Colman Deegan said of the latest deployment. “Our approach to service delivery, utilising the latest generation optical networking technology powered by Ciena, enables us to provide our customers with ultra-low latency connectivity and unparalleled support for AI and cloud services.”
