SAP is set to acquire data lakehouse platform Dremio.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, though it’s expected to close during the third quarter of this year, subject to regulatory approval.

Dremio was founded in 2015 by Jacques Nadeau and Tomer Shiran, and acts as a high-performance means for both human users and AI agents to query and analyze data where it lives. The serverless platform is built atop open projects like Apache Arrow and Iceberg, allowing users to ingest and transform data directly in the data lake or connect with data in external databases.

Dremio will augment SAP's flagship Business Data Cloud platform, unifying both SAP and non-SAP data. Rather than an integration, SAP said Dremio will act as a “complement” to its existing offerings.

The enterprise software giant also positions the purchase as a means to support agentic AI projects, providing customers with a means to connect disparate data sources for agent applications without needing to move or convert any of it.

“Enterprise AI doesn’t stall because the models aren’t good enough; it stalls because the data isn’t ready for AI agents. Dremio eliminates that bottleneck,” SAP CTO Philipp Herzig noted. ”Combined with SAP Business Data Cloud, we can now take customers from raw, fragmented data to governed, AI-ready intelligence on a single open platform.”

At SAP, Dremio will support what the software giant described as a “universal, open catalog” that will “form the foundation of the SAP Knowledge Graph, embedding business relationships, organizational hierarchies, regulatory classifications, and cross-system lineage as native properties.”

SAP said it is “fully committed” to continuing to invest in open Dremio’s central open-source projects, including Apache Polaris, as well as Iceberg and Arrow.

“When we started Dremio, we believed it should be simple and fast for users to access all of their enterprise data on one governed platform. The rise of generative AI enabled a much broader vision, enabling humans working with agents, and agents operating autonomously to find, understand, and use enterprise data to answer any question or take any action," Shiran wrote In a post on LinkedIn. “Today, we're accelerating the attainment of our vision. Dremio has agreed to join forces with SAP, pending regulatory approval. Together, we will give enterprises something they've been asking for, one open, governed platform where agents can reason, decide, and act.”

According to Crunchbase figures, Dremio had raised a total of $410 million, with prior backers including Cisco Investments, Insight Partners, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Its website lists the likes of Shell, NetApp, Michelin, and Amazon as customers, with the e-commerce giant tapping Dremo to help map data for its supply chain optimization teams.
