Oracle expanded its multicloud networking capabilities with the release of a fully managed connection between Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
After a soft launch earlier this year, Oracle Interconnect for AWS is now generally available for clients running distributed architectures across both hyperscalers. Oracle touted the benefits over a bespoke connection between the two clouds with the promise of zero egress fees, a reliable and consistent cost structure, and stronger security via the industry standard IEEE 802.1AE MACsec encryption.
With its on-demand nature, Oracle said users can scale connection capacity over time without experiencing downtime, service disruptions, or structural redesigns.
According to the vendor, general availability starts in OCI Ashburn and AWS US East (N. Virginia), with further OCI-AWS region pairings rolling out over the coming months.
Oracle Interconnect for AWS follows a similar interconnection with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) that was released in 2024, as Larry Ellison and team add to the growing multicloud harmony of sorts between the hyperscalers.
Notable attempts include Google Cloud’s tie-up with Amazon’s own AWS Interconnect multicloud service, which is expected to support Microsoft Azure later this year.
Amazon’s multicloud lead was helped along by Lumen Technologies as Interconnect’s first named program partner. This has paved the way for Lumen’s cloud-agnostic ambitions, which saw it swallow up network infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) player Alkira for $475 million this year. In a recent interview with this title, Alkira CEO Amir Khan saw his firm as providing the “glue” between cloud and on‑premises connectivity, with that proposition now driven deeper into the private network via Lumen.
This may sate market demand in the ongoing AI buildout, with Forbes research claiming 82% of IT professionals and cloud engineers expect AI services to drive multicloud networking adoption due to a shortage of specialized accelerator hardware and the need to access diverse AI agents across multiple vendors.
