Oracle is the latest hyperscale name to team up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on multicloud interconnects.

The partnership will give customers from the respective rivals private managed connections, allowing them to run applications and move data seamlessly between corresponding cloud services.

Supporting both full- and split-stack multicloud deployments, the unified initiative enables cloud customers to leverage offerings from multiple cloud vendors without the inherent costs and complexities.

Nathan Thomas, SVP for product management at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, said the move will “help our mutual customers modernize their applications, unify their data, and unlock new generative AI opportunities.”

Oracle and AWS mark the latest cloud coalesce among some of the biggest names in the space as they look to appease both customer infrastructure needs and looming regulatory burdens.

AWS launched Interconnect multicloud in late November, enlisting Google Cloud as its initial partner. The offering provides a transport resource that encompasses MACsec encryption, ensuring data moved from one cloud environment to another is secure. Adding to the multicloud offering would be a last-mile iteration with Lumen that provides connections to AWS from data centers and remote locations

Those efforts add to the removal of egress fees for customers moving data out of cloud environments from AWS, Microsoft, and Google Cloud. But motivating those moves was the specter of European legislation, with the European Union’s Data Act – which came into force last September – forcing cloud firms to make it easier for customers to switch between providers. Hyperscalers have also sought to slash other data transfer costs in a bid to comply, such as Google’s axing of "data transfer essential" fees and Microsoft's offering “at-cost” transfers for EU users.

Oracle, too, has sought to comply, with offers of some 26 interconnected partner cloud regions providing private cloud-to-cloud connectivity. Those add to its distributed Exadata database offerings, which users can employ across multiple clouds.

The OCI x AWS Interconnect–multicloud service will be available later this year in the AWS US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1 region.
