Comcast unveiled sensing technology that turns fiber into a distributed environmental sensor.

By analyzing vibrations, the operator's fiber sensing technology aims to increase visibility across its network, which chief network officer Elad Nafshi said would help it better “anticipate problems, respond faster and minimize the impact to customers.”

Under the hood, advanced sensing technology continuously tracks changes in light signals traveling through fiber to identify vibrations and nearby physical activity. AI analyzes the data in real time, helping to distinguish meaningful events from everyday background activity.

Comcast pointed to examples such as a subway train moving past an underground cable or construction machinery working near a buried fiber route, which then trigger an early warning alert to Comcast's engineering teams.

With the tech, Comcast likely can better navigate incidents such as its 2023 Super Bowl outage, when vandals caused damage to a fiber optic cable. Alongside Charter Communications, Comcast has called for tougher measures against “domestic terrorists” who deliberately sabotage telecoms infrastructure.

The firm plans to develop its sensing solution with other technologies, for example, automatically deploying drones to give teams a real-time view of fiber damage, vandalism, wildfires or accidents, helping them assess incidents and respond more quickly. Comcast also sees potential to extend the technology across interconnected and third-party fiber infrastructure that its services rely on, with the aim of improving reliability across the end-to-end network.
