Cloudflare acquired VoidZero, a software vendor and the company behind the open-source JavaScript tooling project Vite.
Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, however, Cloudflare committed $1 million to support the Vite ecosystem to ensure users that it’ll remain independent.
The acquisition will see VoidZero tools available natively in Cloudflare offerings, including the Rust-based Rolldown bundler and underlying Oxc toolchain, along with the Vite build tool Vitest test runner.
Cloudflare contends the addition will provide users with a “one-click deployment stack” to aid AI-coded application development.
"The best engineers I know are shipping more code than ever, and writing less of it by hand. AI is doing more of the typing – so everything around it has to keep up,” Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince noted. "Evan [You] and his team built Vite from scratch with the same philosophy we used to build Cloudflare: strip out the bloat and make it fast. Bringing them on board gives millions of developers, and the AI agents working alongside them, the fastest path from local code to our global network.”
Founded in October 2024, the startup sought to address the fragmentation of the JavaScript ecosystem, creating open-source toolchains for one of the most widely used programming languages in the world.
Global venture firm Accel has repeatedly backed VoidZero, joined by the likes of Amplify Partners, Preston-Werner Ventures, and Prisma founder Johannes Schickling
Its Vite+ offering provides the focal point for all of its various tools and has almost 5,000 stars on GitHub. The Vite plugin for Cloudflare has 13.9 million weekly downloads – the equivalent to more than 10% of Vite’s entire weekly volume.
By formally integrating VoidZero’s tooling directly into its Workers developer platform, Cloudflare said the move would “unify the entire software development life cycle.”
“Developers and autonomous AI agents alike will be able to move from an idea to global production instantly via a native, pluggable Vite deploy ecosystem,” a company statement reads. “Through this acquisition, Cloudflare plans to drive a project-centric development paradigm.”
"Our mission at VoidZero has always been to eliminate the fragmentation and performance bottlenecks of the modern web stack," VoidZero’s You said. "Cloudflare shares our obsession with speed and architectural purity. Joining forces allows us to keep the Vite ecosystem neutral, open, and vendor-agnostic, while giving us the resources and global infrastructure to supercharge the developer experience for millions of engineers worldwide.”
The VoidZero acquisition comes as Cloudflare continues to double down its developer ecosystem to the rise of AI-native apps.
In late April, it expanded its agentic AI services, providing coding agents with the means to create Cloudflare accounts and even register domains. Those updates added to the launch of Mesh, a private network built to connect users, applications, infrastructure, and AI agents without exposing systems to the public internet or relying on VPNs.
Cloudflare leaders previously claimed that employees were running “thousands” of AI agent sessions daily, placing its bets on agentic AI-led restructuring to “supercharge” value for customers.
That restructuring, though, saw 20% of its workforce laid off, with CEO Prince saying it would look to hire staff in 2027 with a focus on hiring talent familiar with agentic AI software.
