Following on the heels of VMware’s news last week that it’s working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), VMware made two more announcements today as it continues to assert itself into the burgeoning hybrid cloud market.
First, it said Telefónica is using VMware to offer virtual data centers as a service. And secondly, Equinix is connecting its cloud platform with VMware’s vCloud Air.
VMware and TelefónicaUsing some VMware products, including vSphere, Telefónica is evolving its Virtual Data Centre (VDC) service. Telefónica says its VDC is an infrastructure-as-a-service offering, which it considers a component of a hybrid cloud strategy.
VDC is now available in the U.S. in addition to the previously available locations of Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.
The new VDC 3.0 version includes infrastructure auto-scaling in response to peaks in demand. It now also permits users to buy applications and middleware — such as databases, application servers, or web servers — on demand.
Telefónica and VMware also are working to develop a centralized management portal so VDC customers can manage their cloud infrastructure, whether deployed at local nodes or connected internationally, through a single portal.
VMware and EquinixIn other hybrid cloud news, the data center company Equinix said it is offering access to VMware vCloud Air on its Platform Equinix in major markets across North America and Europe. Access is available through Equinix via dedicated, private connections for enterprise customers looking to build out their VMware-based hybrid clouds.
With vCloud Air, enterprises can burst off their private Vsphere clouds into public cloud resources, including now, AWS.
Customers also can consolidate workloads at an Equinix IBX data center where Equinix offers a selection of cloud service providers with direct connections to many of these platforms.
