Here’s our gathering of the week’s news bits around software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), and related topics.
... A10 Networks went public Friday morning at a price of $15 per share, raising roughly $187.5 million. At press time, trading was hovering around $16, a gain of about 7 percent. A10 is an applications delivery controller (ADC) company competing with the likes of F5 and Citrix.
... Analyst firm Research & Markets is predicting the SDN market will grown at 62 percent per year from now through 2018.
… Huawei and Telefónica said they recently ran successful tests of SDN jointly on IP and optical networks. Based on commercially available Huawei routers, reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs), and optical transport network (OTN) gear, the new SDN-based IP and optical network architecture uses a centralized controller, generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS), path computation element protocol (PCE), and other technologies for centralized control of the multilayer, multidomain network.
The joint test with Huawei is part of what Light Reading calls Telefonica’s “aggressive” push to introduce NFV into its international operations as it puts its chips down on SDN and NFV. Other vendors touting IP and optical networks include Ciena, Cyan, and Infinera.
…Silver Peak announced it now is providing software-defined WAN optimization for Equinix’s Performance Hub to help improve data-center connectivity. Performance Hub extends the enterprise to a hybrid cloud environment. Silver Peak says its WAN optimization can connect the smallest remote sites to the largest data centers with up to 1 Gb/s of WAN throughput, allowing an enterprise to consolidate cloud connections at a Performance Hub.
…Anuta Networks says it’s expanding its NCX network orchestration platform so it now can connect the LAN, WAN, and data center together. NCX is designed to automate existing network infrastructures while integrating with self-service portals through REST APIs. The newly released Technology Platform 3.0 at the heart of NCX now orchestrates global virtual data centers and expands the roster of devices it supports. Also this week, Anuta announced it entered a partner agreement with Juniper Networks.
…Speaking of Juniper, it announced this week that service provider Cloud Dynamics will use Juniper’s Contrail SDN platform to orchestrate its cloud data center. Juniper says Contrail will allow Cloud Dynamics to efficiently connect the virtual environment with the physical network and provision underlying services. It also will enable Cloud Dynamics to offer IaaS hosting services across multiple data centers.
... Padmasree Warrior, Cisco's chief technology and strategy officer, joined the board of Box.
... Pertino announced that it's been hiring out of New Zealand through a program called InterNZ.
... Alcatel-Lucent created an NFVisionary Award, and Radware was named the first recipient.
…Finally, Edgeware released a new version of its Distributed Video Delivery Network (D-VDN) that will enable operators to build their own content delivery networks (CDNs) using an SDN approach. Most cable and telecom operators have a large installed base of set top boxes connected via legacy networks, and operators build duplicate delivery networks when they send on-demand services to these devices and to the latest clients (think smartphones and tablets). With the new version of D-VDN, servers and control software can record, cache, and deliver content to both device types without the duplicate delivery network.
