Happy Friday, everyone! Here’s SDxCentral’s gathering of the week’s news bits around software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), and related topics.
... At its re:Invent conference, Amazon Web Services gave a talk on the AWS network architecture. As reported by GigaOm, Distinguished Engineer James Hamilton described availability zones consisting of multiple, relatively small data centers (50,000 to 80,000 servers), with 25 terabytes per second of connectivity between availability zones. (Coincidentally, Facebook talked about its network too; see link below, or just click here.)
... Amazon also announced it's using a custom chip, designed by Intel, to run a new breed of AWS instances called C4.
... Github Enterprise was updated to include support for AWS.
... Nokia and HP announced they will team up to create a joint telco cloud product that will be compliant with ETSI NFV guidelines. The intent is to give operators an open source-based cloud that can address reliability and availability demands, as well as speed up their ability to move toward NFV deployments.
... QualiSystems released its CloudShell 6.1 software. Its creation was heavily influenced by customers' demands for the ability to share orchestration they develop on the CloudShell platform to drive higher productivity. The updated version features a suite of new capabilities that allow creation, import, export, merging, and synchronization of full orchestration and automation stacks between separate CloudShell deployments.
... Corsa Technology, together with ESnet and REANNZ, successfully demoed the first international SDN-only IP transit network of three autonomous systems (AS) managed as SDN domains. The demo, part of a project codednamed "Treehouse," is one step toward a goal of building a worldwide group of SDN islands connected by an SDN-BGP routing stack and controller.
... The majority of mobile operators think they could increase data revenues by 15 percent through real-time contextual offers that can be immediately activated and purchased via a mobile device, according to a survey published by real-time BSS supplier Openet. That's $47 billion in additional revenue, if you're not quick with a calculator.
... WebNMS launched Symphony Orchestration Platform, a unified software suite for automation of service provider network operations. It allows carriers and other service providers to transform existing static service offerings into dynamic services, as well as introduce new SDN- and NFV-based services as they grow.
... The Open Networking User Group (ONUG) board published three use-case white papers, listing the top 10 requirements from the organization's NSV, Network Overlay, and SD-WAN Working Groups.
... Illumio added Microsoft Chairman John W. Thompson to its board of directors. Thompson is also former chairman and CEO of Symantec.
... Multitenant Microsoft clouds will now be supported in Rackspace data centers, Information Week reported. This means customers using Hyper-V virtual machines can build like systems in Rackspace as an extension of their own data center.
