Rubrik’s Cloud Data Management platform got a major refresh today with the company’s 14th release of its flagship product. The Andes 5.0 release, among other things, adds new integrations with Oracle, SAP, and Microsoft environments, as well as NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Cassandra.

It’s the company’s most expansive release to date, and it automates and protects applications across data centers and clouds while meeting compliance regulations across both environments, said Chris Wahl, chief technologist at Rubrik.

“From a data protection perspective, we’re providing that single platform that allows us to protect what you have in either environment,” Wahl said. “And we’ve put a lot of work into removing manual steps with a lot of integration.”

The company added new protections for SAP Hana and Epic Electronic Health Records (EHR). Andes has certified integration with SAP Hana, which means database administrators can use native SAP tools, such as SAP Hana Cockpit and Studio, to provide point-in-time recoveries with intelligent log management. They can also defend against ransomware through data immutability.

For Epic, the software provides policy-driven automation and ransomware immutability to healthcare providers facing HIPAA compliance and cyber risk. This makes it easier to protect and recover Epic EHR environments built on InterSystems Caché databases.

Andes also debuts Live Mount for Oracle databases. This feature provides instant recovery and clones, in addition to auto-discovery and policy-driven automation for Oracle database environments.

“Oracle is a beast — everyone is running it somewhere,” Wahl said. “What I like about this particular feature is that we take something we’ve had before, the Oracle database protection, and we’ve completely removed the headache of discovering instances manually. We then offer Live Mount and all that simplicity. And we have some intelligence built into the system. All the nerd knobs have been automated.”

Andes also provides new protection for Microsoft on-premises and cloud environments. This includes Windows bare metal recovery with full system migration to any hypervisor or cloud instance.

Plus, it orchestrates policy-based protection of Microsoft Office 365 via its Polaris software-as-a-service platform. This allows enterprises to auto-scale Office 365 protection and control where data is stored in the cloud.

And in partnership with Microsoft, the company introduced Rubrik Accelerator for Microsoft Azure. This is a new offering purpose-built for Azure. It provides enterprise data protection and application mobility across data centers to Microsoft Azure cloud. Microsoft offers a cloud cost discount, and Rubrik provides easy migration.

“It is a way to get you into public cloud with a lot less friction,” Wahl said. “There’s still a number of folks hesitant on this whole cloud thing, but I think we know the answer is yes, cloud is a thing. We want to accelerate a way to do anything you want to do in Azure, such as long-term data retention. And then we want to provide that disaster recovery or test/dev that tends to get people excited about public cloud.”

Some of the other updates include:

• NAS Direct Archive to securely manage massive unstructured datasets across datacenter and cloud storage systems while delivering global search for instant and granular data discovery.
• Andes now works with Rubrik Datos IO to protect and manage NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Cassandra.
• The release also introduces Elastic App Service to provide a high performance and secure data service for any application, including Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SAP HANA, MongoDB, and Cassandra. Database administrators can continue using their preferred management tools while using Rubrik’s automated data lifecycle management and data immutability.
• Andes also provides performance increases in the cloud with incremental-forever cloud archival for faster recoveries and lower costs. By using Rubrik’s CloudOn services, enterprises can deliver cloud instantiations of sizable virtual machines in minutes for disaster recovery or test/dev.

“Folks are looking to actually build hybrid cloud models rather than just having a random collection of stuff in both places [on premises and in clouds],” Wahl said. “The pain point has been: I have too many things to manage, and I need specialists and special tools to protect all of these environments. We are automating the traditional tooling you need. We still give the admin exposure to what is going on there, but we get them out of the business of managing the backend and into the business of running the transformational efforts they are trying to run.”
