Red Hat is acquiring 3scale, a provider of application programming interface (API) management technology. The transaction is expected to close this month. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but 3scale has raised $5 million in funding, according to CrunchBase.
3scale was founded in 2007 to enable organizations to create and use APIs, which allow applications to talk to each other. 3scale also allows companies to manage APIs in a hybrid cloud environment, separating the cloud management layer from the API gateway.
Its more than 500 customers include Coldwell Banker, Johnson Controls, CrunchBase, and the University of California, Berkeley.
3scale and Red Hat have actually been partners since early 2015. They created a joint solution that combined 3scale’s API management with technologies from Red Hat’s existing product portfolio.
With the acquisition, Red Hat will integrate 3scale’s software into Red Hat’s middleware, container application platform, and mobile offerings. Companies will be able to create and publish APIs with tools such as Red Hat’s JBoss Fuse and then manage those APIs once they have been published.
Recently, 3scale introduced a container version of its API Gateway for Red Hat OpenShift.
Red Hat’s most recent acquisition prior to 3scale was its purchase in October 2015 of Ansible, an IT automation startup.
Red Hat UpdatesDuring Red Hat’s fiscal Q1 2017 earnings call yesterday, CEO Jim Whitehurst said the company’s platform-as-a-service (PaaS) open source community—OpenShift Commons—now counts more than 200 organizations. These organizations contribute code for PaaS and containers.
In addition, Red Hat recently previewed the next generation of its OpenShift Online, which has had over three million applications deployed to it. It “has now been updated to become the industry's first multi-tenant, Docker container and Kubernetes-powered public cloud platform,” said Whitehurst on the earnings call, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript.
Whitehurst also provided some Red Hat OpenStack updates on the earnings call. He said the company recently launched Cloud Suite to offer a hybrid cloud stack with a container application platform based on OpenStack. And Red Hat also lately announced the general availability of its most recent OpenStack distribution, Red Hat OSP 8.
