The NVM Express consortium updated each of its 11 specifications, including the introduction of support for post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and solid–state drive (SSD) virtualization for locally attached drives.
Updates covering specs including NVMe 2.4 Base and NVMe-MI 2.2 aim to prepare storage security layers to withstand future quantum computing decryption risks, with support extended for quantum-resistant algorithms approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
NVMe virtualization was also added, expanding native handling of virtual environments directly on local attached drives, a move the consortium said would help ensure virtual machine (VM) mobility without requiring time-consuming storage reconfigurations or hypervisor emulations.
Rate limiting to optimize storage performance was also added, which imposes input/output operations per second (IOPS) and bandwidth caps on SSDs to set predictable service tiers and stabilize system quality of service.
The consortium injected what it described as “sustainability advancements,” including voltage monitoring to help track device health parameters, providing engineers with the means to identify power anomalies before they impact performance or reliability. A device recovery simplification and configuration addition allows hosts to restore an NVMe subsystem to factory default settings in a bid to streamline troubleshooting.
The updates, announced at an industry event in Santa Clara, California, look to help storage engineers get the best out of their increasingly costly drives by means with which to “address the growing demands of data-intensive applications in AI, cloud, enterprise, and client environments.”
“The latest NVMe specifications introduce foundational enablers to remain secure in the post-quantum era while streamlining device manageability and improving sustainability, future-proofing NVMe storage across enterprise, cloud, AI, and client environments,” NVM Express President Amber Huffman explained. “As security requirements and operational efficiency demands continue to evolve, NVM Express remains focused on delivering innovations that improve data protection and storage efficiency.”
