Nokia has partnered with internet provider Netplus on an internet protocol television (IPTV) service deployment in India.
The vendor provided 400 Gb/s routing technology and a software-defined access network (SDAN) platform to scale Netplus’ high-speed broadband and IPTV services across Punjab and other cities, reaching nearly two million users in the country.
Specifically, Netplus is deploying Nokia’s 7250 Interconnect Router (IXR) series for broadband aggregation, switches used by Microsoft, CoreSite, Empyrion Digital, and Orange Belgium, among others.
Released in mid-2020, the line supports multiterabit connectivity and is designed to span top-of-rack switches, spine switches, super-spine switches, and modular chassis spine switches. It can support port speeds up to 400 Gb/s Ethernet (400GE), with a claimed path to 800GE.
The 7250 IXR will be used alongside the 7750 Service Router (SR) to deliver broadband network gateway (BNG) capabilities.
Nokia’s 7750 core routers use the vendor’s FP5 routing silicon, a programmable routing chip targeted at high-bandwidth use cases such as 5G backhaul and industrial IoT (IIoT) networks.
The routers include FP5 line cards that can support current 100GE and 400GE traffic as well as next-generation 800GE with lower power consumption compared to previous iterations. The models are designed to share the same network with legacy products.
Netplus' SDAN deployment also includes Nokia’s proprietary Lightspan optical line terminals (OLT), which provide high-capacity, software-defined fiber access nodes that support multiple PON technologies. PON is a fiber-optic technology that uses a point-to-multipoint architecture to transmit data from a centralized source, typically OLT, to multiple endpoints via optical splitters.
Netplus reported the Lightspan OLT will enable fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) through both GPON and XGS-PON technologies, promising flexibility for various deployment scenarios and enabling high-speed broadband services.
Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller will act as the network automation tool, which can support PON technologies at speeds of up to 100 Gb/s.
Unveiled in 2017, the Altiplano software platform is designed to automate the fixed-access network, centralizing and virtualizing network functionality that is embedded in access equipment.
The virtualized access platform includes the Altiplano Access Controller and the Altiplano Access Virtualizer, which together can manage abstraction levels to enable programmability and automation.
With the Nokia deal, the Punjab-based Netplus hopes to migrate viewers from conventional broadcast television to interactive IPTV on-demand platforms, while enabling opportunities for data-intensive applications like online retail and virtual learning environments.
