Nexcom unveiled a compact gateway to give smaller enterprises the security means to shore up their edge networks.

The DTA 1600 is built on MediaTek’s Filogic 880 quad-core processor and is designed to give small businesses firewall or virtual private network (VPN) performance without needing enterprise-level space, power, or budget.

It’s about the size of a router you might find in your home, but features a 10-gigabit Ethernet (GbE) small form-factor pluggable plus (SFP+) port, which the vendor claimed was rare for a device of its size, along with 2.5 GbE and 1 GbE ports. It also comes packed with dual-layer failover and bypass functionality to ensure smaller players still have the continuity and resiliency features the big boys get.

Nexcom own testing suggests the DTA 1600 can support speeds of more than 5 Gb/s with more than 1,000 rules active for when it comes to firewalls, or 6.12 Gb/s at 0.12% central pricessing unit (CPU) load for hardware acceleration routing.

The offering also ships with SDK support and a pre-built OpenWrt environment, giving customers the means to build and customize their own networking software, cutting development time for vendors looking to bring their own products to market.

“Small and medium-sized businesses face the daunting challenge of securing complex edge networks without the resources of larger enterprises,” Allan Chui, VP in Nexcom’s Network and Communication Solutions Business Group, explained. “The DTA 1600 bridges this gap, empowering SMBs and independent software vendors with proven enterprise-grade security that respects their space and power constraints.”
