Megaport continues its reinvention from pure-play network-as-a-service (NaaS) vendor to quasi-bare metal neocloud after it enlisted Vast Data to support its automated infrastructure platform.
Vast’s flagship AI Operating System (OS) will aid Megaport’s private, programmable connectivity offerings, providing a unified foundation for customer AI workloads. Vast’s DataSpace fabric, meanwhile, will extend Megaport’s platform, enabling users to access and manage their data consistently across on-premises, public cloud, and edge locations without creating new silos.
“Enterprises are no longer thinking about networking, compute, and data as separate decisions,” Michael van Rooyen, EVP for global innovation at Megaport, noted. “They want infrastructure that is automated, global, and flexible enough to support what AI requires next. Vast gives us one software layer to support enterprise data services across both Megaport and Latitude.sh, allowing us to expand beyond connectivity into the services layer customers need to build and scale modern AI workloads, with fewer operational silos and a faster path from distributed infrastructure to production AI.”
Following its acquisition of Latitude late last year, Megaport has since pivoted its core NaaS offering to become a distributed compute platform, leveraging its massive software-defined networking fabric and the Brazilian outlet’s automated platform to offer IT infrastructure while keeping its own operations streamlined with little to no humans in its facilities.
Megaport recentlu completed the digital infrastructure trifecta, launching a storage offering that uses the same dedicated backbone as its networking and compute services, a move it claims will drive down customer costs with zero egress fees.
Enlisting Vast – the $30 billion Nvidia-backed darling of the data storage industry – sees Megaport tap a vendor whose AI OS already underpins AI platforms for neoclouds like CoreWeave, Nscale, and Fluidstack.
"AI does not scale on infrastructure that is powerful in pieces but fragmented in practice,” Phil Manez, Vast VP for strategic initiatives at Vast, explained. “The next era will be built on global fabrics that connect data, compute, and services wherever customers need them. Megaport has built one of the most important connectivity platforms in the world, and with the VAST AI Operating System, that platform can become a data-aware foundation for production AI, helping infrastructure, compute, and governed data operate together.”
