AI operating system (OS) vendor Vast Data secured a mammoth $1.17 billion deal with CoreWeave.

The deal, which is an extension of the pair’s existing partnership, will see Vast’s AI OS serve as the primary data storage and management platform underneath the neocloud’s compute infrastructure. Vast’s OS will feed data to all of the AI training and inference workloads for CoreWeave customers like Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft.

“The Vast AI OS underpins key aspects of how we design and deliver our AI cloud,” Brian Venturo, co-founder and chief strategy officer at CoreWeave, explained. “This partnership enables us to deliver AI infrastructure that is the most performant, scalable, and cost-efficient in the market, while reinforcing the trust and reliability of a data platform that our customers depend on for their most demanding workloads.”

Vast's technology looks to solve one of AI infrastructure's biggest bottlenecks in keeping GPUs fed with data.

The company's architecture promises “instant access to massive datasets” while maintaining what it calls “cloud-scale economics,” allowing CoreWeave to deploy the platform across any of its data centers without concerns about reliability or scale limitations.

Vast offers an architecture built on Nvidia systems, which aligns well with the GB200 NVL72, H100, and H200 systems in use in CoreWeave sites. The neocloud was one of the earliest providers to offer Nvidia GB200 systems, with the likes of IBM, Mistral AI, and Cohere among the first few customers using the offering.

Unveiled last March, Vast’s Nvidia-based AI architecture embeds storage and database processing services directly into AI servers, which it claims users like CoreWeave can use to “support continuous training, real-time inference, and large-scale data processing for mission-critical industries.”

“Our deep integration with CoreWeave is the result of a long-term commitment to working side by side at both the business and technical level,” Vast CEO Renen Hallak noted. “By aligning our roadmaps, we are delivering an AI platform that organizations cannot find anywhere else in the market.”

Vast was founded back in 2016 and has reportedly held talks to raise capital at a $30 billion valuation – a far cry from its last raise in 2023, which saw the firm valued at around $9 billion, with recurring revenues of around $200 million.

Adding to its billion-dollar CoreWeave win, the company secured another recent victory with Cisco extending support for its OS to its AI points of delivery.
