Cisco’s Application Policy Infrastructure Controller, Enterprise Module (APIC-EM) has a new carrier use case to show off. Italian service provider Italtel says it's using APIC-EM to develop its own dynamic admission control (DAC).

One of the biggest use cases for DAC is to combat network congestion. In a multisite enterprise, DAC manages bandwidth dynamically and guarantees quality-of-service for communications applications.

APIC-EM extends the policy-based model of Cisco's Application-Centric Infrastructure (ACI) — the company's software defined networking (SDN) offering — to older lines of Cisco gear. APIC-EM is available for free to customers and developers.

In other Italtel news, the company yesterday joined the Intel Network Builders program, which aims to accelerate innovation in SDN and network functions virtualization (NFV).

Italtel is in the process of refactoring its network products including a session border controller, a routing and policy server, and an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) core. Italtel uses virtual network functions (VNFs), operating on both the control and user plane, to get performance equivalent to physical network functions.

The Intel Network Builders group provides access to a library of software for implementation in production environments.

Earlier this year, Italtel supported Vodafone’s NFV and SDN strategy, called Telco over Cloud, and its implementation in Vodafone Germany via a partnership with Cisco.
