Ericsson and Juniper Networks have scored 20 new customers as part of their 5G transport and security partnership that was announced last year.

Three of those contracts are with service providers: TrueMove of Thailand, DNA of Finland, and Jazz of Pakistan. At least one U.S. mobile provider is also in the group, but hasn’t been named, according to Sally Bament, vice president of service provider marketing at Juniper.

Bament said the Ericsson partnership has worked because the companies have complimentary products to go after the 5G transport and security space for operators. Ericsson’s focus is mainly on radio access, microwave, fronthaul, and backhaul, while Juniper is more focused on IP core and edge products.

“Ericsson can take Juniper into places like radio and mobile that Juniper has not seen before, while Ericsson gets an industry-leading IP routing portfolio, all managed by Ericsson,” Bament said. She added that there are plans to “work on other solutions areas,” but she would not describe them. “We’ll roll out more this year,” Bament said. “We’re not stopping in this area.”

The strength of the partnership is to offer customers portfolio management of Ericsson and Juniper products “all the way from the cell site to the core,” Bament said.

Juniper’s MX Series provides hard network slicing, according to a statement from the companies. Juniper’s NorthStar SDN controller works with Ericsson’s Dynamic Orchestration.

Customers can create a network slice through all the devices, setting certain characteristics for guaranteed bandwidth or latency. Ericsson’s Orchestrator adds another level of management “granularity,” Bament explained.

Juniper recently complemented Ericsson’s security with its SRX and vSRX gateway products for IPSec security. Juniper PTX, MX, and SRX security will be integrated natively into Ericsson Security Manager to help facilitate monitoring of security policies, but the companies didn’t offer a timeline for that integration.

TrueMove said in a statement that it has created an “integrated best-of-breed” data center gateway using Ericsson’s virtual network functions (VNFs) and Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVi) with Juniper’s MX series products.
