Mesosphere’s latest version of its data center operating system — DC/OS 1.9 — includes more than 100 integrated services from third parties, including Apache open source software Spark, Kafka, and Cassandra, as well as new data services from Alluxio, DataStax, Couchbase, Elastic, and Redis Labs.
Mesosphere DC/OS is the commercial version of the Apache Mesos container management platform.
The company is making an argument that its DC/OS is a better choice for an enterprise’s cloud services than relying on companies such as Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Ed Hsu, VP of product marketing with Mesosphere, said it’s fine for enterprises to use cloud providers such as AWS for their compute, networking, and storage infrastructure. “But when it comes to network services, use the leading message queue, analytics, container orchestration platform,” said Hsu, referring to Mesosphere DC/OS. “It gives you complete application portability.”
Hsu cited the recent revelation by Snap, the parent company of the social media app Snapchat, that it paid almost as much to Google for public cloud services in a year as it generated revenue.
“It’s important for enterprises to have portability,” said Hsu. “Four out of the 10 largest banks, by assets, use our stuff. They will not let their trading platform be stuck on one cloud.”
Mesosphere DC/OS 1.9 includes applications such as the data-processing software Apache Spark, the message queue Kafka, the database software Cassandra, and Elastic Stack for analytics and data insights.
“A lot of companies don’t know how to get smart on these,” said Hsu. “That’s why people are going to AWS. Cloud is powerful because it gives you infrastructure and all those platforms. The challenge is you can get locked in without cost control.”
Mesosphere’s applications can run on the infrastructure of the customer’s choosing: on premise, in a public cloud, or a hybrid configuration.
“We give you the ability to use all the popular open source data services,” said Hsu. “Instead of using data services from a cloud provider you can just use their infrastructure.”
“We celebrated 100 customers a couple of weeks ago, and now we’re celebrating 100 services,” Hsu added.
DC/OS 1.9 will be available through direct sales, and through resellers, including the recently announced agreement with HPE.
