Dell Technologies sent an email to its customers this week confirming the company is currently investigating an incident involving a Dell portal that contains a database with limited types of customer information.

Meanwhile, in late April, a threat actor on a hacker forum claimed to be selling a hacked database containing 49 million Dell customer records, as reported by the Daily Dark Web. This database allegedly includes personal and company information on systems purchased from Dell between 2017 and 2024, spanning from full names, addresses, unique 7-digit service tags of systems, serial numbers, to Dell customer numbers and Dell order numbers.

According to Dell’s email to customers titled “An important message about your Dell information,” the company confirmed “limited types of customer information was accessed,” including name, physical address, and Dell hardware and order information that includes service tag, item description, date of order and related warranty information.

However, Dell emphasized that the data breach didn’t involve financial or payment information, email addresses, telephone numbers or any highly sensitive customer information.

“Although we don’t believe there is a significant risk to our customers given the type of information involved, we are taking proactive steps to notify them as appropriate,” Dell wrote in a statement sent to SDxCentral via email.

Dell's response to data breach Upon discovering the data breach, Dell claims it promptly implemented its incident response procedures, applied containment measures, began investigating with the help of external forensic specialists, and notified law enforcement.

“Dell Technologies has a cybersecurity program designed to limit risk to our environments, including those used by our customers and partners. Our program includes prompt assessment and response to identified threats and risks,” the statement says.

In addition, the company continues to monitor the situation and takes steps to protect its customers' information.

While Dell believes there is no significant risk to its customers, the company recommends that customers remain vigilant about the possibility of tech support scams and encourages customers to report concerns immediately if they notice any suspicious activity related to their Dell accounts or purchases.
