DE-CIX upgraded its New York metro platform with major network architecture upgrades.

The platform was upgraded to a quad-node network architecture, with two core nodes in New York and two in New Jersey in a bid to support rising demand for 400-gigabit Ethernet (GE) ports. DE-CIX said the new design will support higher throughput and lower latency interconnections being driven by the rise of graphic processing unit (GPU)-intensive and AI-based workloads, delivering "higher redundancy, greater resilience, and enables true A/B connectivity strategies across the Hudson River.”

DE-CIX also deployed reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM)-based smart switching technology across the metro network. This allows network routes to be dynamically configured through software, enabling traffic to be added, dropped, or rerouted remotely without manual intervention, and helping to accelerate provisioning while beefing up operational flexibility and network resilience.

“The New York metro is a market where customers expect infrastructure that simply works, no matter what’s happening around it,” DE-CIX's VP of North America Ed d’Agostino, noted. “Our upgrades are about building and reinforcing that reliability at scale. With our four-node architecture spanning New York and New Jersey, and readiness for higher-capacity services, we’re building for how networks are actually evolving – more distributed, more performance-driven, and with greater degrees of visibility and control than ever before.”

The DE-CIX New York upgrade follows a similar effort in the Big Apple that saw DE-CIX expand its New York point-of-presence (PoP) in the iconic 60 Hudson Street carrier hotel.

DE-CIX New York was established in 2013, and is the largest internet exchange (IX) in the New York metro area and northeast region, as well as the youngest of North America’s top five exchanges. It is also the third largest on the continent, supporting more than 260 connected networks in total.

DE-CIX’s global interconnection ecosystem also connects New York participants to Frankfurt and other international markets via its GlobePeer direct remote peering solution.

The firm recently expanded its presence to Equinix's NY9 in New York, while expanding across markets such as Sofia, Dubai, and São Paulo. It also stands halfway between the gutter and the stars somewhat with its Space-IX project, which entails DE-CIX bringing its capabilities into low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations and other space-based assets, enabling them to interconnect with one another as well as terrestrial systems.
