DE-CIX’s new internet exchange in São Paulo has officially come online.
The operator’s newest offering, DE-CIX São Paulo, spans three data centers: Equinix SP4, Elea SPO1, and Ascenty SP4.
The internet exchange will provide local and remote peering options, alongside cloud exchange and multicloud routing. Users will be able to connect directly to carriers, internet service providers (ISPs), cloud, and content providers from more than 100 countries.
Despite boasting 165 million internet users, DE-CIX contends Brazil lacks internet exchange capacity.
“The growing digital economy in Brazil requires state-of-the-art connectivity, ensuring that data exchange takes place fast, efficiently, and securely, as local as possible, and as global as necessary,” DE-CIX CEO Ivo Ivanov noted in a statement. “The new IX opens up a complementary offering that further enriches the country as the second largest market in the world in terms of number of networks.”
Announced in October 2024, the São Paulo IX joined a DE-CIX offering in Rio de Janeiro, marking the fifth continent supporting the operator’s services.
Its Rio IX connects Elea Data Centers’ RJO1 facility with Equinix RJ2, with both sites enabling Brazilian companies to link up with the operator’s other exchanges across the Americas and Europe, including in data hubs like Frankfurt, Madrid, and New York.
The operator said it has already onboarded some 20 customers in the region, including edge computing platform TBC Azion Technologies. Azion CEO Rafael Umann said the new interconnect will allow the firm to expand its network, offering low latency “regardless of user location."
DE-CIX’s Brazilian expansion adds to its existing presence in Latin America, having launched two internet exchanges in Mexico. Connections in Mexico City and Queretaro were unveiled in May 2023, launching later that October. The sites directly connect to its carrier and data center neutral offering in Dallas.
