Cloud Software Group, the conglomerate behind Citrix and Tibco, has unveiled plans to acquire data management provider Arctera.

The deal, announced earlier this week, will see Arctera operate as a standalone unit in Cloud Software Group’s portfolio of businesses. No financial terms were disclosed, though the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to regulatory approval.

Arctera was founded in late 2024, having emerged as a standalone business from Veritas after its Enterprise Data Protection unit was acquired by data protection software provider Cohesity.

The Pleasanton, California-based firm offers data resilience, data compliance, and data protection products that shore up enterprise data. The firm claims it serves 70% of the Fortune 100.

Tom Krause, CEO of Cloud Software Group, said in a statement that Arctera’s offerings were a “natural complementary addition” to its portfolio.

According to the company, it's funding the Arctera deal using cash on its balance sheet. Cloud Software Group also shows no sign of slowing its acquisitions, with Krause saying: “We have a strong track record of continuing to invest in our portfolio.

“Looking ahead, we aim to acquire at-scale enterprise-focused software businesses that provide proven mission-critical capabilities and high value to public and private sector customers while also ensuring they’re a good fit to operate within our proven Cloud Software Group model.”

The Arctera acquisition, however, comes with Cloud Software Group laying off staff for the third straight January. Some 12% of the conglomerate’s staff were axed in 2024, while 15% were cut the year prior.

The staff reductions were part of Cloud Software Group’s plan to become a $20 billion-plus diversified software company, which Krause previously described as focusing on “adding value for our long-standing customers while driving a much higher level of business discipline and accountability.”

Lawrence Wong, Arctera’s CEO, said the vendor was “thrilled” to become a part of Cloud Software Group.

“With Cloud Software Group’s global resources, industry-leading portfolio and seasoned leadership team, Arctera will be even better positioned to continue helping customers manage one of their most valuable assets: data,” Wong said.
