Samsung Electronics and Cisco completed a series of 5G demonstrations with the service provider Orange in Romania. And today, the two companies are demonstrating some 5G use cases in the country.

It’s worth noting that these two companies are also working closely together with Reliance Jio in India. Jio is building a massive SDN greenfield LTE network in the country and making plans to advance to 5G. And both Cisco and Samsung have won huge contracts with the service provider.

Perhaps their collaboration in India is helping the two telecom vendors to gain joint business in other locales.

In Romania, the two companies said this week that they completed a 5G fixed wireless trial that ran for a month and a half across multiple homes in the city of Floresti. The trial used Samsung's 5G products including its virtualized RAN, a small 5G access unit, and multiple indoor and outdoor 5G routers. And it used Cisco’s Meraki Z3 WiFi Router and Ultra Gateway Platform, which delivers a 5G virtual packet core on top of Cisco NFV Infrastructure.

By leveraging the wide bandwidth available at 26 GHz and advanced antenna technologies such as massive MIMO and beamforming, the companies were able to achieve coverage beyond 1 km at 1 Gb/s speed for a single user in live conditions.

Today, Samsung and Cisco, together with Orange, are holding a demonstration near Floresti City Hall to present the results of the trial and showcase some 5G-powered smart city and home entertainment use cases.

For example, the two companies will demonstrate a Samsung node that is installed on a streetlamp to provide wireless connectivity for temperature and humidity sensors and security cameras. Sensors and cameras are connected wirelessly to the node, which is then connected to the core network via 5G.

In another demonstration, two players compete against each other in a live cloud video game over the 5G network.

Orange says the 5G fixed wireless demonstrations have helped it to verify several use cases that could be enabled by the technology. “This is a major step in driving forward the development of 5G in Europe and Africa,” said Arnaud Vamparys, senior vice president for radio networks and microwaves at Orange, in a statement.

Cisco and Samsung

For Cisco, the collaboration with Samsung and Orange, together with its collaboration with Samsung and Jio, highlight its global momentum in 5G.

In the United States, both AT&T and Verizon are moving forward with their 5G plans, including fixed 5G. Recently, they both announced initiatives with San Jose, California, to boost the city’s IT infrastructure in support of eventual 5G network launches. But both AT&T and Verizon are keeping their list of vendor partners rather close to the vest. Verizon has said it’s working with Ericsson.

Speaking of Ericsson, Cisco’s partnership with that company appears to be languishing. At Cisco Live in June, Ruba Borno, vice president of growth and chief of staff to Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, said “Partnerships are not easy. We continue to be open to that partnership. Their [Ericsson’s] changes are creating a lack of consistency,” referring to Ericsson’s shuffling of its top executive team.

But Cisco’s work with Samsung seems to be moving full-steam ahead.
