Calix is extending its Calix One platform into 50 Gb/s (50G) passive optical network (PON), pitching the move as a standards-based path for service providers that want to add capacity without rebuilding their access networks.

Calix's 5-G PON targets high-capacity, low-latency use cases including business services, mobile backhaul, smart infrastructure, multitenant environments, and wholesale deployments. The company added the platform is meant to preserve service continuity while enabling incremental capacity growth through the Axos E7-2 50G-PON line card, which it says will support 50G PON, 10G symmetrical PON (XGS-PON) and gigabit passive optical network (GPON) on one network.

Calix said the approach allows operators to expand bandwidth, maximize fiber investments, and lower total cost of ownership while maintaining a single network for multiple service types, letting providers deploy and scale 50G PON using existing tools.

The San Jose, California-headquartered vendor also tied the release to its software and cloud stack, with 50G PON integrated into its Axos operating system and supported by Calix Operations Cloud, giving operators visibility into network health, alert intelligence, event correlation, and life cycle management.

Also flagged was the GigaPoint 50G-PON optical network terminal (ONT), which Calix said supports premium high-capacity services with 10-gigabit Ethernet (GE), 25GE, and 50GE local area network (LAN) interfaces.

Calix customer CityFibre suggested 50G-PON will help evolve multiservice fiber platforms without rebuilding the underlying network.

“We have already upgraded our nationwide full fiber network [with Calix] from GPON to XGS-PON – bringing multigigabit speeds to nearly five million premises," Cityfibre Chief Product Officer (CPO) David Tomalin noted. "Going forward, 50G-PON access solutions will enable us to evolve and push the boundaries of technology, enabling a fresh generation of innovative, feature-rich residential, enterprise, and business services to be delivered over the same fiber – all with the highest quality of service and best economics.”

“The access solution on the platform is the bedrock for everything that comes next – AI-driven applications, new enterprise models, and service categories we haven’t even defined yet,” Calix CPO Shane Eleniak added. “In that environment, success depends on how quickly operators can adapt, not how often they rebuild. Others in the Calix orbit working with 50G PON include Brightspeed. A trial from last year saw Calix’s Broadband Platform integrate 50G PON into Brightspeed's current optical distribution network architecture to support multiple technologies over a single unified network.
