Brightspeed has teamed with software provider Calix to test passive optical network (PON) technologies to boost speeds on its fiber network.

The pair trialed a 50-gigabit PON system that features a dual rate capability allowing for both asymmetric 50G/25G and symmetric 50G/50G capabilities to coexist on Brightspeed's existing XGS-PON and gigabit (GPON) optical distribution network (ODN).

In less technical terms, Brightspeed tapped Calix software offerings to power a system capable of handling different speeds – both faster downloads (50G/25G) and equally fast uploads and downloads (50G/50G) – on the operator’s existing fiber network.

The tests saw Calix’s Broadband Platform integrate 50G PON into Brightspeed's current ODN architecture to support multiple technologies over a single unified network.

Brightspeed used the tests to see if its fiber network was capable of supporting converged enterprise-scale services, including private networks, fixed wireless, and mobile backhaul.

“By planning today for 50G PON, we're building a foundation for tomorrow's connectivity, whether that means 8K streaming, next-gen telehealth, or the future of remote work and entertainment," Brightspeed Chief Network Officer Brian Bond noted in a statement.

“Investing in the Calix Broadband Platform allows Brightspeed to integrate 50G PON-enabled services and boost operational efficiency using their existing hardware, software, and fiber investments, without massive tech overhauls," Calix Chief Product Officer Shane Eleniak added. "This helps them scale now and into the future with transformative services and converged business and residential networks, driving impressive growth.”

The Calix deal comes days after Brightspeed secured $575 million in fresh funding to fuel its ongoing fiber network expansion.

The cash injection adds to the $3.7 billion raised in 2024 as the Charlotte-based firm aims to extend its fiber optics to three million homes and businesses over the next five years.
