Palo Alto Folds CloudGenix in $420M SASE Play

Palo Alto Networks got serious about SASE, announcing the acquisition of SD-WAN vendor CloudGenix for $420 million cash in a bid to bolster its Prisma Access offering. The managed security provider turned secure access service edge (SASE) vendor said CloudGenix’s SD-WAN capabilities will form the second pillar of its SASE offering.

“The combined platform will provide customers with a complete SASE offering that is best in class, easy to deploy, cloud managed, and delivered as-a-service,” said Palo Alto Chairman and CEO Nikesh Arora, in a statement.

The deal is expected to close during Palo Alto’s fiscal fourth-quarter this fall. CloudGenix co-founders including Kumar Ramachandran, Mani Ramasamy, and Venkataraman Anand have said they will join Palo Alto.

Microsoft Digs Deeper Into 5G With Affirmed Acquisition

Microsoft acquired Affirmed Networks in a move to bolster its position in the 5G ecosystem. The deal follows on a number of recent 5G-focused cloud deals Microsoft has scored with telecommunication operators, though this one moves the cloud giant’s operations slightly outside of that zone.

Financial terms were not announced, but Affirmed has raised $155 million, according to Crunchbase, including a $38 million funding round a year ago.

Yousef Khalidi, corporate VP for Azure Networking at Microsoft, explained in a blog post that the deal will allow the company to provide a more compelling platform to operators.

The deal also comes just a day after Affirmed named Anand Krishnamurthy as the company’s new president and CEO. Krishnamurthy, who previously served as COO, replaced Hassan Ahmed, who retired from the CEO position but will stay on as chairman of the company’s board.

AWS Pledges $20M to COVID-19 Testing

Amazon Web Services (AWS) committed at least $20 million for COVID-19 diagnostic research and testing via its AWS Diagnostic Development Initiative. This new program is open to accredited research institutions and private entities that use AWS to run research-oriented workloads related to point-of-care diagnostics (testing that can be done at home or at a clinic with same-day results).

While it will initially focus on COVID-19, AWS says it “will also consider other infectious disease diagnostic projects” in the future. The cloud giant will provide funding to participating organizations through AWS in-kind credits and technical support to research teams.
