Edge startup StackPath closed a $216 million Series B funding round led by Juniper Networks and Cox Communications bringing its total raised to $396 million.

The 5-year-old company raised $180 million in a March 2016 Series A led by Abry Partners.

In addition to investing in the startup, Juniper and Cox are also StackPath customers although they use its edge computing platform in different ways, said Wen Temitim, CTO at StackPath.

The platform’s edge services products include virtual machines (VMs), containers, serverless, content delivery networks (CDNs), web application firewalls (WAFs), managed domain name system (DNS), service monitoring, and distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection.

“Juniper has an entire suite of networking and security that have all of these features for enterprises, so we’re working with them to run those strategic services in a globally distributed way, which allows enterprises to consume them much more easily,” Temitim said. “We’re working with Cox to basically deploy our platform within their footprint so they can take advantage of these same services and start to offer these services to their customers.”

This also shows the different ways in which enterprises and service providers can use the edge computing platform, he said, adding that StackPath has seen “a bunch of inbound interest from services providers about us embedding our platform deeper within their footprint. The idea is we provide a very Switzerland-like platform that isn’t competitive to anything they are doing but allows them to consume these services within their footprint.”

The Series B will allow StackPath to further invest in its product and expand the engineering and marketing teams to keep up with demand and increase platform deployments, he said.

In addition to leading the funding round, Juniper Networks' SVP of Strategy and Corporate Development Kevin Hutchins and Sujata Gosalia, EVP and chief strategy officer for Cox Communications, joined StackPath’s board of directors.

“We found that StackPath is one of the only companies that has a scalable, high-performance edge cloud already running in the market with mission-critical customer workloads,” Hutchins said in a prepared statement. “The edge will be a critical dimension of every service provider and enterprise operation.”
