Women in Cybersecurity Aren’t Unicorns: ‘We Do Exist’

Women currently make up close to 25% of the cybersecurity workforce, according to Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) and Cybersecurity Ventures’ estimation. The number has nearly doubled since 2013, but it’s “still way too low,” which pushed Fortinet and WiCyS to work together to help the cyber community to “do better.”

“With women making up 51% of the population, that's really a tremendously underutilized resource,” Fortinet Deputy CISO Renee Tarun said. “But then we also see disparity in the workforce. At the end of the day, we're not unicorns. We in cybersecurity do exist.”

Female cybersecurity professionals also face advancement barriers. “Men are four times more likely to hold executive roles than their female counterparts, they're nine times more likely to have managerial roles than women, and sometimes they're paid 6% more than women,” she added.

VMware Research: Spying on Employees Is Bad for Trust

While we can all agree hybrid work is here to stay (at least until the pendulum swings again), two new reports find that employees and employers have very divergent views about what this post-pandemic work model should look like.

One global survey of 7,600 IT and business decision makers commissioned by VMware found 70% of companies surveyed have implemented or plan to implement some type of employee surveillance measures. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this “drastically increases” employee turnover.

Meanwhile, new research from NTT analyzed 1,146 interviews across 23 countries and found that executives are much more satisfied with this new normal than their employees. For example, 79% of bosses believe employees prefer to work in an office. But just 39% of employees say they prefer to work from an office full time.
