LAS VEGAS — Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) today launched a managed hybrid cloud service for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Azure Stack.

HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud is built on OneSphere, the company’s hybrid cloud management software-as-a-service (SaaS) announced late last year. It also incorporates compliance and cost control technology acquired from two cloud consulting firms: Cloud Technology Partners (CTP), which HPE bought last year; and RedPixie, acquired in August.

The company’s GreenLake portfolio includes infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) as well as what HPE calls “workloads-as-a-service” — things like backup, SAP Hana, database, and big data management. Customers consume these managed services in a pay-as-you-go model with metered usage. Today’s announcement expands GreenLake’s as-a-service offerings to hybrid cloud.

At HPE Discover, Ana Pinczuk, senior vice president and general manager of HPE Pointnext, said the new GreenLake Hybrid Cloud provides three key capabilities: cloud management, cost control, and compliance control.

The first includes on-premises, private, and public cloud management. “So the ability to have a common interface no matter where your workloads and data resides,” Pinczuk said.

The second capability helps customers manage costs associated with public cloud usage. “Being able to really control costs, and meter usage, and have no-to-exceed-type capabilities depending on where your infrastructure is,” Pinczuk said.

Finally, the hybrid cloud services automates compliance controls. “It’s difficult to know where you data is and are you compliant with those rules? We’ve assembled a set of rules from our CTP acquisition that allows us to see over 1,000 types of compliant capabilities and we’ve built those rules into HPE GreenLake Hybrid Cloud,” Pinczuk said. “It’s a way to automate what is sometimes a very challenging task.”

Because the technology is built on OneSphere it initially supports AWS and Microsoft Azure. “And we’re working on expanding,” said Ric Lewis, SVP and GM of HPE’s Software-Defined and Cloud group. “Our strategy is very much hybrid cloud.”
