Wedge Networks announced Wednesday a cloud security service targeted at small and mid-sized businesses. Called Cloud Network Defense (CND), the service is due to be available Dec. 1.

Calgary-based Wedge has at least $5.8 million in venture backing. Major service providers including China Mobile have signed on for the company's existing software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization NFV security solutions, which virtualize control of network policy and deployment of security devices.

The CND platform will allow Wedge's service provider clients to sell cloud security off-the-shelf to enterprise clients. Wedge will split profits 50/50 with the providers, according to a Wedge executive.

How does it work? Using software sitting in the service provider's network, CND conducts deep content inspection and deep packet inspection without redirecting traffic to outside infrastructure. Offending traffic is then scrubbed according to parameters requested by the end user.

As concerns over data breaches mount, Wedge sees the small and medium business segment as a prime untapped market for security solutions. Pricing will be set at $45.50 per month for 10 Mb/s.

"Imagine being able to phone your service provider call center and ask for whatever security services you might need—anti-malware, anti-spam, parental control, whatever," Wedge COO Steve Chappell said in a statement.

"The call center enables the service on the spot, and the fee appears on your next bill."
