Vultr has teamed with SUSE and Supermicro on an architectural framework designed to simplify the deployment and operation of AI workloads in distributed environments.
The partnership promises to address the need for sending all data back to a central cloud, which is no longer viable for real-time AI. It aims to deliver a seamless, cloud-to-edge pipeline that integrates high-performance hardware, localized cloud infrastructure, and unified Kubernetes management.
The joint initiative is targeted at organizations continuously facing challenges in latency, cost, and operational consistency as AI moves closer to the point of data creation. It does this by breaking down the infrastructure into three critical layers – the cloud and near-edge; the metro edge; and the control layer.
The cloud and near-edge allows enterprises to deploy regional Kubernetes AI clusters across 33 global data centers to place workloads near users. Teams use cluster API (CAPI) for programmatic scaling, and Nvidia graphic processing units (GPUs) for inference when demand surpasses local edge capacity.
For the metro edge, Supermicro’s central processing unit (CPU) and GPU servers provide tailored hardware and software for low-latency, low-power environments. These are validated with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and SUSE Kubernetes Engine (RKE2 and K3s) to orchestrate distributed inferencing on Vultr to process real-time computer vision and sensor data.
The control layer uses SUSE's Edge, Rancher Prime, and Fleet platforms to facilitate GitOps-driven management across remote sites. This is Integrated with SUSE AI to maintain uniform security and model updates, with SUSE Industrial Edge extending those capabilities into private, on-site operational environments.
"As AI moves into its next phase, the next challenge is data sovereignty and geographic proximity,” Vultr CMO Kevin Cochrane noted in a statement. "By combining our global reach with regional GPU acceleration, we are helping enterprises extend their primary cloud regions directly to the edge. This partnership ensures that no matter where data is created, the sovereign infrastructure to process it is already there and ready to scale."
Vultr has also set up its Cloud Alliance as a partnership program to create a composable cloud ecosystem, allowing businesses to build custom cloud environments without being locked into hyperscaler ecosystems.
This latest development follows recent work between Vultr and SUSE on Kubernetes and AI. This involved providing SUSE Rancher Prime and SUSE AI on the Vultr Marketplace.
The duo started providing Vultr Cloud GPU and Vultr Bare Metal with SUSE AI to support AI workloads, including model training and inference. They also pledged a greater workload portability and reduced vendor lock-in through cloud-native platforms aligned with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) ecosystem.
