For its software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) and virtual network services, Verizon is using monitoring software from SevOne.

With it, enterprise clients can view all their services, spanning the physical and virtual network. And SevOne’s web interface spans multi-vendor technology, as well.

SevOne’s software lets IT professionals analyze performance of the hybrid WAN and correlate disparate metrics into a single-services view spanning the SD-WAN and the supporting infrastructure. It also monitors applications and drive service performance alerts.

“Verizon's SD WAN portfolio is a major milestone in our company's multi-stage journey toward fully virtualizing the network,” said Shawn Hakl, VP of networking and innovation at Verizon, in a prepared statement.

Verizon uses Viptela’s platform to provide SD-WAN as a managed service to enterprises. Viptela’s technology expands on Cisco’s iWAN technology in Verizon’s network.

While SD-WAN makes some things simpler — such as controlling multiple connections with one software overlay — it can make other things more complex. In its announcement today Verizon said many of the legacy infrastructure management tools cannot support virtualized environments.

Other monitoring companies have recognized this new niche as well and are stepping up to fulfill the need. ThousandEyes, for instance, has created agent-to-agent tests to make it easier to pinpoint issues in both the forward and reverse paths for SD-WAN.
