The U.S. Navy has enlisted L3Harris to provide networking equipment to boost communication systems for naval forces.
Military & Aerospace Electronics reported that the Florida-based defense contractor received a $30.3 million order to supply its Battle Force Tactical Network (BFTN) tech, which offers secure communication capabilities. Forces can make use of the system’s ability to communicate, even when facing network or satellite jamming from adversaries.
L3Harris’s technology operates at high-frequency bands – anywhere between two to 30 MHz – providing naval forces with a way to communicate even in situations far out at sea or submerged.
The contract was filed in early October, but it only came to light last week following the government shutdown. In the event of a shutdown, defense agencies are unable to award new contracts or purchase orders unless in instances of risk to human life or serious national security threats.
L3Harris has a storied history of developing secure network systems for warfighters. It previously worked with the U.S. Navy, providing it with multiband capable satellite communications (SATCOM) systems to support secure wideband communications.
Its wider intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) network offerings are designed to provide defense agencies with infrastructure to support real-time battlefield communications. These joint operational networks can transmit data across a unified platform that connects disparate sensors and servers from across varying battlefield environments, including in orbit.
Just last week, the defense contractor unveiled Netcaster, a specialized router designed to increase tactical network optimization and performance. The vendor is targeting the specialized router as a sovereign capability, with its unveiling specifically aiming for the Australian market.
Beyond hardware solutions, L3Harris offers a tactical network management and simulation software, MissionOps, designed to allow armed forces to simplify and tweak coms planning and configurations prior to action.
MissionOps consolidates core tactical network management capabilities into a single software suite deployable on everything from a laptop to a server. It’s also accessible via the cloud.
