Swedish operator Telia will use Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core across its network throughout all six countries where it operates, including Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, and Lithuania.
The deal includes Nokia’s Cloud Mobility Manager and Cloud Mobile Gateway products.
Nokia will begin deploying Telia’s new core network in multiple data centers across the company.
The Telia deal is a big win for Nokia, which only introduced its Cloud Packet Core product about a year ago, shortly after it finalized its acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent.
Nick Cadgwan, director of IP mobile networking at Nokia, said that Telia selected Nokia as part of its commercial tender process, and it will use the platform to develop more services and applications.
Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core is built with a cloud-native architecture that supports both wireless and fixed access technologies and can be deployed over both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.
Although Cadgwan wouldn’t comment on Telia’s 5G plans, he did say that the Cloud Packet Core provides a foundation for operators as they evolve from 4G to 5G.
