T-Mobile US CEO Mike Sievert could leave his position before the end of his contract, according to reports from Germany.

German publication Handelsblatt states that Sievert, who took over the role as CEO of T-Mobile in 2020, wants to take a break.

Handelsblatt reports that Sievert has said internally he will step down either this year or next. His current contract runs until 2028.

T-Mobile's chief operating officer, Srini Gopalan, is a potential candidate to replace Sievert.

Gopalan has previously headed Deutsche Telekom's Germany business.

Deutsche Telekom is the majority owner of T-Mobile, owning a 51 percent stake in the carrier.

Sievert replaced John Legere as CEO of T-Mobile, taking charge the day T-Mobile closed its merger and acquisition of Sprint.

During his tenure, the company has ramped up its 5G rollout, carved out a satellite connectivity deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX via its Starlink satellites, and has pursued high-profile acquisitions, including UScellular, plus fiber acquisitions including Lumos and Metronet, outlining its fiber ambitions.

He joined T-Mobile in 2012 as chief marketing officer.
