Spectra Logic joins the growing band of storage players seeking to help users extend the life of their existing capacity as the memory crunch continues to bite.
The vendor’s Spectra Storage Reclaim solution identifies inactive unstructured data on existing drives and moves it to “an economical protected tier,” thereby allowing businesses to reclaim capacity for more active workloads.
It works by read-only analysis measuring inactive data levels, with qualified data moved using either Spectra’s StorCycle software or an integrated data-management technology. The now-free flash and disk storage capacity is then returned to active workloads.
J.P. Morgan Global Research estimates that 2026 will end with DRAM prices more than 400% higher than those at the start of 2024, while Deloitte suggests memory capex alone could constitute roughly half of the total chip industry capex in 2026.
To help users get the best out of the arrays they already have, Spectra joins the likes of Vast Data and Vdura in offering capacity redux projects aimed at alleviating pressure from soaring hardware costs.
With RAMageddon set to last beyond 2028, Spectra said its storage reclaim offering will help infrastructure teams facing upcoming hardware refreshes and budget decisions, providing them with “a measured approach to storage capacity optimization before an organization designs or purchases additional infrastructure.”
“Organizations have traditionally responded to growing storage requirements by buying more capacity. But the cheapest flash you’ll ever buy is the flash you already own,” said Nathan Thompson, CEO of Spectra Logic.
“Storage Reclaim shows organizations what is consuming their existing storage capacity and moves data that no longer requires premium performance. With an ecosystem that includes Komprise, Starfish Storage, and rclone, customers can reclaim that capacity using the approach that best fits their environment.”
