Italian service provider Sparkle has launched a new point of presence (PoP) in Helsinki, Finland, to expand its reach into Northern Europe.

Located at Digita’s data center in Pasila, Helsinki, the PoP will support IP Transit services via a 400 GbE-enabled router.

The new node will also be integrated as part of Seabone, Sparkle’s global IP backbone, to provide operators with low-latency IP transit services.

The Finnish PoP brings Sparkle’s total to 89 in Europe and adds to its existing connection point in Stockholm, Sweden. The firm added two additional physical access points earlier this summer, with PoPs launched in San Diego, California, and the Greek city of Thessaloniki to bolster connectivity across the U.S. and Balkans, respectively.

Sparkle said its latest PoP will “guarantee further redundancy and diversification of international connectivity for the Northern European market.”

Its point of presence expansions come amid a busy period for the company, with plans for new subsea cables alongside a potential new owner.

The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, along with Retelit, is attempting to acquire Sparkle from Telecom Italia (TIM) in a deal set to be worth €700 million ($792m).

An agreement was reached back in April, with the deal expected to be finalized in the last quarter of this year, subject to both antitrust and ‘Golden Power’ (special checks for transactions in sectors deemed to be strategic by the Italian government) authorizations being completed.

Meanwhile, Sparkle is pressing on with plans to expand its subsea network, including a new cable connecting Türkiye and Greece. Unveiled during Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, Sparkle teamed up with Turkcell on plans to build a 2,485-mile diversified route linking Izmir in Türkiye and Chania on the Greek island of Crete. It’ll also link up with Sparkle’s existing BlueMed Cable to points of presence in Milan.

The Italian firm is also working on GreenMed, a submarine cable system connecting Italy to Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, and Türkiye.
