Sony Group, the conglomerate that owns electronics, gaming, entertainment, and other businesses under the Sony brand, has inked a new contract with Orange Business Services to implement its SD-WAN offering on a global basis. The companies declined to disclose a value on the contract, but an Orange Business Services spokesperson said “the contract duration for the Sony deal is multiple years.”
The new SD-WAN network will initially be deployed across Sony’s two largest companies in film and electronics. Orange will also become Sony’s principal global provider for a fully automated network and the companies plan to implement its Flexible SD-WAN offering across all of Sony’s business units in the coming years.
The early SD-WAN deployment will connect more than 500 locations in more than 50 countries, enabling Sony to share IT talent and increase visibility across continents, according to both companies. Sony intends to make enterprise applications virtually available across all business lines and regions in the cloud. The adoption of SD-WAN will also enable Sony’s IT service suppliers to be on-boarded in a more streamlined manner through a single user interface, the company added.
“Orange innovation, integration capabilities and international network are the catalysts that will allow us for the first time to bring our regional operating companies under one umbrella,” Sony Group CIO Makoto Toyoda said in a prepared statement. “It’s a transformative move on our part that opens the way for us to embrace new forms of IT innovation.”
Orange Business Services has been developing its SD-WAN services portfolio since 2016. The company integrates the SD-WAN with vendor managed internet and an array of security components, which it can resell as managed internet services in about 120 countries. The division of Orange Group serves more than 3,000 multinational enterprises.
The new deal with Sony follows other big customer wins over the last year. In March 2018 it signed a $294 million contract with engineering firm Siemens AG to replace its MPLS with SD-WAN. And in January Orange signed an agreement with Weener Plastics to deploy SD-WAN across its 24 sites.
