... Cloud provider Joyent scored a $15 million funding round announced on Friday, bringing the company's total funding to $135 million. The money will go toward highlighting the use of container technology within its cloud infrastructure. Joyent CEO Scott Hammond also said he wants its cloud platform technology to complement Docker's container technology; expect more information in the next few weeks, he told GigaOm.
... During this week's Open Networking User Group (ONUG) meeting in New York, Big Switch Networks said it will offer two "starter kits" for its Big Cloud Fabric product that started shipping in September. The kits will include switch hardware and SDN software required for a range of different-sized projects.
... F5 CEO John McAdam announced plans to retire next September, at the end of F5's fiscal 2015.
... PLUMgrid released verison 2.0 of Open Networking Suite (ONS). It features expanded support for OpenStack distributions and network functions. Collaboration between PLUMgrid and Red Hat also led to the certification of Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 5 with ONS 2.0. PLUMgrid will also partner with Piston, Mirantis, Canonical, and Oracle to support ONS for OpenStack cloud implementations.
... NAKA Mobile chose Cisco's virtual evolved packet core — cleverly named the Virtualized Packet Core (vPC) — to modify its network architecture. With this announcement, NAKA mobile hopes to expand beyond Switzerland and offer products to customers around the world.
... The Barracuda Web Application Firewall is now commerce-enabled in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. Customers will have the capability to license it right from Microsoft, providing them with the first infrastructure product integrated with Microsoft Azure Active Directory.
... NEC launched its new PF6800 TAP network-tapping appliance, featuring automated aggregation of telephony packet flows on a network using an open network fabric. The controller is part of the recently announced version 6 of the ProgrammableFlow suite. It will also include improved visibility of network flows to help recognize tap source data and will use OpenFlow switches for aggregation and filtration to limit the load on packet brokers, intrusion detection systems, and other tools.
... Nexenta became certified as a Mirantis Technology Partner, giving customers the ability to use the NexentaStor block and file storage product alongside Mirantis OpenStack.
... CenturyLink selected Alcatel-Lucent's 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS) core routers for its next-generation IP network.
... Microsoft joined the Open Compute Project in January with initial server specifications; this week, the company updated those specs. Included improvements are a dual-processor design built on Intel Xeon E5-26000v3 CPUs; advanced networking for low latency and high bandwidth virtual environments; a compact power supply with the ability to deliver 1,600 watts of power; and support for high-memory configurations.
... Mushroom Networks announced a new, virtual version of its WAN orchestrator that runs on a VMware hypervisor. Truffle V uses virtual leased lines (VLLs) and Broadband Bonding to enable branch-office WAN aggregation, and it comes equipped with a firewall, a bandwidth manager, and advanced features like session keep-alive and traffic monitoring.
... Amazon Web Services brought on a new enterprise strategy chief, as GigaOm and others reported. Former CIO of Dow Jones Stephen Orban also worked at Bloomberg before coming into the new position at AWS.
... NetApp acquired Riverbed Technology's SteelStore product line this week. The SteelStore product supports backup applications and cloud providers, giving customers a choice in how they extend existing data protection infrastructure into the cloud.
... SwiftStack, a company with products built on OpenStack Swift object storage engine, secured $16 million in Series B funding. As reported by Forbes, the round brings the total funding about to $23.6 million with investors including OpenView Venture Partners, Mayfield Fund, Storm Ventures, and UMC Capital.
... Zerto released Zerto Virtual Replication for Microsoft Hyper-V during TechEd Europe in Barcelona. It is the first hypervisor-based replication product to offer enterprise-class disaster recovery, data protection, and workload mobility for both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V.
... Hitachi Data Systems unveiled three new ways for customers and providers to enjoy cloud benefits with Hitachi Cloud -- Compute as a Service, Hitachi Unified Compute Platform (UCP), and Hitachi Cloud Service Provider Program.
