Here’s our gathering of the week’s news bits around software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), and related topics.

… Facebook is building its own Ethernet switch and the software to go with it, a company exec announced at a GigaOm event this week. Code-named Wedge, the top-of-rack switch and FBOSS software will be shared with the Open Compute Foundation as an open source design. According to Enterprise Tech, Facebook aims to open switch appliances and modularize both the hardware and software so building blocks can be changed independently. The company is testing the switch with production traffic in its data centers.

… CloudWeaver, the startup formerly named Lyatiss, announced beta support for Google Compute Engine and general availability of support for Amazon Web Services. CloudWeaver's software-as-a-service provides visibility into cloud services; it shows what a customer's cloud network looks like and provides automated analytics and optimization. The company tells SDxCentral it's planning to expand the service to private clouds later this summer.

… Wind River launched its Titanium Cloud ecosystem for NFV. Brocade, Genband, Metaswitch Networks, Nakina Systems, and Overture are the first members of the ecosystem, which will build NFV products based on Wind River’s Carrier-Grade Communications Server Platform.

… EXFO launched EXFO Test Function Virtualization (TFv), a cloud-based test virtualization offering. EXFO's TFv will offer an application for instantiating and distributing time-based licenses, as well as the ability for operators to share testing software licenses across multiple platforms within their test fleets.

… The Open Networking Foundation (ONF)’s roster of startup members has grown to 24 members in six months. The organization began offering reduced membership fees to startups in January to encourage them to get involved with building the SDN ecosystem.

… Hitachi is integrating its MME/SGSN as a virtualized network function (VNF) with Juniper’s Contrail SDN/NFV controller. Juniper says Contrail’s orchestration simplifies MME/SGSN rollouts by independently scaling them based on subscriber sessions, transactions processing, and radio access point connectivity. Technical and market trials are underway.

… NTT plans to re-introduce its high-performance SDN software switch, Lagopus, as open-source software next month. The switch is OpenFlow 1.3-compliant and is designed for both data centers and wide area networks. NTT also has established an SDN-switch test center to build upon the company’s Ryu SDN Framework.

… The OpenDaylight Project has opened a call for papers to be presented at a mini-summit in Chicago, August 20-22. The mini-summit will be held as a track within the Linux Foundation's Cloud Open North America conference. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, June 29.
