Happy Friday and happy new year, everyone! Here’s SDxCentral’s gathering of the week’s news bits around software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), and other related topics.

... In case you missed it, SDxCentral is now called SDxCentral, covering the universe of Software-Defined Everything. That includes SDN, NFV, DevOps, security, the cloud — pretty much what we've been covering all along, plus a bit more.

... Telecom's SDN- and NFV-related spending will reach $21 billion by 2020, according to a report from Signals and Systems (SNS).

... Fibre Channel lives! The storage networking technology is still on a long-term decline, but it perked up in the third quarter, to sales of $654 million, according to a report from Infonetics (now owned by IHS). That's up 10 percent from the second quarter and up 15 percent from the third quarter of last year. As for why this happened, Infonetics analyst Cliff Grossner cited the "high-performance requirements of flash storage" and a storage-area-networking (SAN) buying cycle among Cisco's customers.

... Sonus announced this week that back on Jan. 2, it acquired the SDN assets of Treq Labs for roughly $10.1 million in cash, plus an incentive that could total 17.6 million shares of Sonus stock. (Sonus' share price was $3.92 as of Thursday afternoon.) The technology in question optimizes voice and video traffic for enterprises and service providers.

... IBM extended SoftLayer to Germany by opening a cloud data center in Frankfurt.

... Apigee announced that its Edge platform is being used by Equinix for managing APIs.

... Mirantis OpenStack 6.0, the version that supports OpenStack Juno, reached general availability. It includes plug-ins for Fuel, the OpenStack development and management tool.

... Cyan announced that its fourth-quarter revenues would be higher than expected: between $30 million and $31 million, versus the company's earlier estimate of $24 million to $26 million. Cyan shares gained 71 cents (28%), closing at $3.26 on Jan. 7, the day of the announcement. The next day, Cyan fell 4 cents (1.2%).
