Edge computing firm Scale Computing has added automation updates to its virtualization platform.

Scale Computing HyperCore, also known as SC//HyperCore, now includes enhanced node lifecycle management, said to allow teams to add, replace, or remove nodes without disrupting workloads at the edge. Integrations with Veeam’s data protection platform, meanwhile, can enable automated, agentless backup and recovery.

Usability improvements include automated virtual machine (VM) space reclamation and replication cleanup, reducing manual administrative tasks, while an overhaul of representational state transfer (REST) APIs for managing and interacting with the platform allows developers to build custom workflows and orchestrations.

The platform’s Terraform provider further leverages automation to enable full VM lifecycle management as code, with automated network and storage configuration, orchestrated snapshots, and replication management.

According to Scale, its enhancements to HyperCore allow it to support legacy applications, modern workloads, and edge AI on one infrastructure, removing the need for separate hypervisor, storage, and backup vendors.

“The enhancements we’ve made to SC//HyperCore allow users to implement and support automation, and to maintain and scale infrastructure with minimal downtime,” said Craig Theriac, VP for product management at Scale Computing. “Our solutions allow users to run advanced inferencing workloads at the edge with supported GPU appliances, delivering the performance, resiliency, and low‑latency processing AI demands.”

Scale Computing’s virtualization updates come after the firm was acquired by edge and network firm Acumera in July. Acumera said the deal strengthened its position as a “market leader” in delivering integrated, scalable edge platforms for organizations operating across distributed locations.

The combined company was rebranded as Scale Computing, bringing together Acumera’s AcuVigil platform with Scale’s hardware and virtualization offerings.

Founded in 2007, Scale Computing had previously raised more than $200 million across 11 funding rounds; past investors included Morgan Stanley, Elevate Ventures, Runways Growth Capital, Lenovo, ABS Capital Partners, and others.

In February of this year, Scale partnered with multi-cloud infrastructure and data protection provider Otava to deliver edge computing infrastructure solutions.

Last year the firm launched the first product in its HC3000 series, the HC3450FG, a hyperconverged infrastructure solution integrated with an Nvidia L4 GPU designed to support AI workloads.
