Samsung is lending its device expertise to the Internet of Things (IoT) with its Artik IoT platform. The company says its platform delivers everything from the modules to the cloud making for a secure connection. “We can ensure a level of security that is difficult to deliver,” said Sara Peach, senior director of business development for Samsung’s Artik.

The company today introduced a new capability, called Cloud Monetization, that it says will make it easier for companies to generate revenue from IoT. Specifically, the cloud monetization will give device makers a way to meter data usage and charge customers for that usage. In the past, device makers have had trouble recouping their data usage because it was difficult to track and manage.

Security Factor

Beyond the data monetization, the company also says that by providing both hardware modules and cloud connectivity, its Artik platform can process data at the network edge or in the cloud. The advantage of having processing power at both locations is that the user can have access to local analytics quickly and then send other data to the cloud for additional processing or a higher level of analysis.

That means that an industrial user, for example, may have an asset in the factory that needs to be tracked. Using Samsung’s Artik, the asset can be connected and the user can know immediately whether that asset is working by processing certain data at the edge. For deeper analysis, the user can send data from that asset up to the cloud where it can be compiled with data from other similar assets for more in-depth analysis.

Peach said the company’s modules come in a small form factor with different levels of processing power and memory. Some are designed to take data from an asset and manipulate it or do a form of edge computing before sending that data to the cloud.

The company says it is one of the few platforms that provides both modules and connectivity, which it believes is a competitive advantage. “Having both the hardware and the cloud means we can provide security at a level that is difficult otherwise,” Peach said.

Artik can connect to Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and SAP’s cloud platform. Samsung also has partnerships with a variety of IoT platforms including GE’s Predix IoT platform and AWS Greengrass.
