Quantum Corporation has unveiled the development of a new highly parallel file system client for its Myriad all-flash file system, aimed at enhancing capabilities for artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and high-performance computing (HPC) users.

The new client is designed to leverage NVIDIA GPUDirect Storage technology, facilitating direct communication between storage and GPU memory. This innovation allows users to enhance their AI/ML infrastructure efficiently, adding GPU nodes to existing Myriad clusters to adapt to changing workflows.

By transforming customer workstations with high-performance GPU cards into operational Myriad nodes, the new approach minimizes CPU bottlenecks and optimizes performance for demanding workloads such as AI model training and high-resolution video rendering.

Multiple client nodes can be integrated into a Myriad cluster, offering flexibility alongside existing connection options like server message block (SMB) and network file system (NFS). “Our vision is to make Myriad the most capable and flexible all-flash storage solution,” said Jeff Mulder, Quantum’s Chief Development Officer. “Myriad’s client executes its own metadata operations and data protection, allowing scalability and maximizing GPU usage.”

The Myriad parallel file system client will be available for evaluation through Quantum’s Early Access Program, allowing select customers to test and provide feedback on new features. This initiative aims to address growing needs for agile data analysis infrastructure that can support advanced technologies like NVIDIA GPUDirect Storage.

Guy Currier, CTO of Futurum Research, emphasized the necessity for nimble, high-performance systems capable of accommodating evolving workflows. Industry integrations are anticipated to assist in critical content production areas such as animation and video processing.

Lance Hukill, Chief Commercial Officer for CHESA, noted his company’s positive experience with Myriad, highlighting its potential to meet the rigorous demands of modern storage challenges. Existing Myriad customers can participate in the Early Access Program leading up to the client’s release in Q1 2025, with general availability expected later that year.
