AT&T renewed a deal with Oracle that will see the telecom giant continue to run its internal databases and applications on the vendor’s cloud platforms.
The five-year renewal includes AT&T’s use of a handful of Oracle cloud-based products. These include its Fusion Cloud Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) that will allow AT&T to automate its ongoing financial and supply chain transformation; expanded use of Oracle’s Fusion Cloud Customer Experience (CX); and expanded use of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to support AT&T’s IT modernization and data center consolidation efforts.
Oracle did not provide financial or service term details of the renewal.
AT&T signed the initial deal in early 2017. It was significant at that time as it moved thousands of AT&T’s internal databases to the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). This provided AT&T with access to those assets via Oracle’s public cloud platform and its own Integrated Cloud, and provide AT&T enterprise customers with more access choices.
The deal was also part of AT&T’s Network 3.0 Indigo initiative that tapped the carrier’s network virtualization moves around SDN, NFV, and cloud technologies in support of its 5G technology deployment.
AT&T eventually signed a 5G cloud-hosting deal with Microsoft and an SDN deal with IBM and its Red Hat division in mid-2019. It then moved last year to sell its Network Cloud technology division to Microsoft and moving its 5G network core, workloads, and services to Microsoft’s Azure for Operators platform.
“AT&T’s cloud transition is a critical initiative for our business,” Jon Summers, SVP for information technology at AT&T, said in a statement on the Oracle renewal. “We’ve worked closely with Oracle on some of our toughest technology challenges over the years, and we’re excited to renew this collaboration for another five years.”
