OpenAI is looking for a network technician to lead networking buildout on the Stargate site in Abilene, Texas.

A job listing on the ChatGPT developer’s website shows it is looking for a senior data center networking technician to lead the physical bring-up process of network infrastructure on a “large partner-operated campus.”

A technician with more than seven years of experience working on large-scale network buildouts is sought after, with “deep” knowledge of both fiber and copper designs and cabling standards.

It’s unclear which partner campus the role encompasses. Stargate data centers are built on a campus owned by Lancium, with several sites already live.

Crusoe is developing a site and leasing it to both Oracle and OpenAI while Microsoft has agreed to lease several hundred megawatts of data center capacity at the Abilene Stargate campus.

The OpenAI listing’s reference to buildout in Abilene is of note, considering OpenAI and Oracle dropped a planned expansion at the site owing to complications around financing and OpenAI’s frequently changing demand forecasting.

A successful candidate would have to be on-site in Texas five days a week.

The role goes beyond buildout in Abilene, with OpenAI wanting someone willing to travel to work on “future OpenAI data center projects” and create “deployment playbooks to accelerate future OpenAI campuses.”

Once the campus referenced in the job listing reaches a ready state, the AI lab said successful candidates will “transition to lead network deployment for future OpenAI data center projects, defining standards and guiding implementation across multiple locations.”

The AI lab commenced construction on another of its Stargate campuses in Saline Township, Michigan, in early June. Chris Malone, OpenAI’s head of data centers, departed in late August, one of several high-profile departures in recent months that included COO Brad Lightcap and chief revenue officer Denise Dresser.
