A cadre of big names tapped a newly launched Linux Foundation “open” initiative with roots in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to accelerate work on streamlining AI efforts to benefit 6G technology development.
The Linux Foundation work is through the newly launched Open Centralized Unit Distributed Unit (OCUDU) Ecosystem Foundation. That word jumble is focused on continuing work started in the OCUDU technical project that was unveiled last year as part of a collaboration between DoD’s Future G office, DeepSig, and Software Radio Systems (SRS), and was this week subsumed into the Linux Foundation under the guise of helping guide “development to support 5G and early AI-native 6G services.”
“Premier partners” of this work include AMD, AT&T, DeepSig, Ericsson, Nokia, Nvidia, SoftBank, SRS, and Verizon. The group’s efforts were succinctly summed up through a supporting quote from AT&T COO Jeff McElfresh.
“With nearly 150 years of supporting government communications, we’re proud to partner with the Department of War and Linux Foundation effort in advancing an open, multivendor ecosystem,” McElfresh contributed.
Those efforts are now being combined with Nvidia’s previously launched 6G AI-Wireless Intelligent Network (AI-WIN) venture. That venture was initially underpinned by Nvidia’s radio access network (RAN)-control focused AI Aerial platform, and late last year gained efforts from Open RAN Development Company (ODC) toward constructing an “all-American AI-RAN stack.”
Many of the members from that Nvidia-led effort are “general members” of the OCUDU project, with Nvidia stating a new combination of work targeted at building “the world’s next generation of wireless networks on AI-native, open, secure, and trustworthy platforms.”
“AI is redefining computing and driving the largest infrastructure buildout in human history – and telecommunications is next,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, boastfully claimed in a statement tied to this new endeavor. “Together with a global coalition of industry leaders, Nvidia is building AI-RAN to transform the world’s telecom networks into AI infrastructure everywhere.”
Nvidia’s overly non-specific spiel did note one specific angle in that this work would help 6G networks be more trustworthy in their support of physical AI systems, and that “the initiative represents a shared commitment to ensure 6G infrastructure – the foundation for the world’s future connectivity – is open, intelligent, resilient, and accelerates innovation and safeguards global trust.”
