Nutanix pushed general availability of its Karbon certified Kubernetes platform that runs as part of its broader Nutanix Cloud Native stack.
Karbon is an on-premises Kubernetes platform that combines storage, networking, observability, and monitoring into Nutanix’s cloud native platform. It allows customers to set up a production-ready Kubernetes platform with networking and default storage classes. Karbon also comes installed with the Kubernetes container storage interface (CSI) that can be used to mount a file system using the internet small computer system interface (iSCSI) with Nutanix Volumes and network file system (NFS) with Nutanix Files.
The combination is designed to simplify the deployment of Kubernetes-managed containers and provide the support to run persistent workloads in those environments. Greg Muscarella, vice president of products at Nutanix, said the company is able to do this in a way that “eliminates the steep learning curve and complexity involved in deploying and operating a production-ready Kubernetes platform.”
Karbon is built into the company’s Enterprise Cloud Platform. That is also the location where customers run their business-critical applications, virtualization, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and unstructured data, “so essentially it is hyperconvergence of virtualization and container technology,” he added.
Muscarella explained that Karbon fills the needs of its customers that were looking to adopt containers to increase portability and reliability of software deployments. It also differentiates itself in the market by linking together the storage, networking, and monitoring needs that are often divided up among multiple vendors.
Nutanix released an initial version of Karbon last November.
